At the risk of sounding like the beginning of a very well known Bryan Adams track...
Back in the summer of 2020, Metra got in touch because she'd started to notice that more and more HR folks were finding themselves out of work as a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic. This bothered Metra for many reasons, but not least because just a few short weeks earlier she had watched in awe as the HR tribe had rallied and responded so brilliantly in the face of all the Covid-19 challenges. Time and again Metra said she'd seen first hand how HR professionals were sacrificing themselves in order to lift and support others; often neglecting their own health and wellbeing in the process
Adding insult to injury
If you or anyone you know was working in HR through the middle months of last year you will know what a difficult and overwhelming time it was for our profession. Each and every time the government announced (*read dropped) changes to working practices, HR had no option but to respond, often with very little information. HR Professionals ended up giving over many an evening and/or weekend to responding to these 11th hour Covid announcements which left many of our community feeling drained and burned out. Having supported their organisations through the early months of the Covid tidal wave, unfortunately insult was then added to injury when many of these same individuals then found themselves out of work and switching the lights off on their way out
Creating a movement for good
Compelled by a desire to help and powered by her action-led approach, Metra was on a mission to find a solution to this. So we got our collective brains together and The Back To Work Club idea was born and launched in October 2020.
Always Stronger Together
The BTWC epitomises what we stand for at HR Ninjas. It's about giving back when you can and about taking when you need. And that through collaboration we are always #strongertogether
No resting on laurels!
Last year we supported over 100 Ninjas back into work through the club, with many clubbers finding new work and those that didn't said that they had a renewed sense of confidence which meant that they felt better prepared to face the job market. Metra and I felt proud of what we achieved. But there was no resting on any laurels. Because we knew that there were more people needing back to work support and we were just getting started!
Time to change lives
So, off the back of the hugely successful BTWC#1 , we are super excited to be re-opening the door to the Club again!

I was given my work coach in December after signing up for the Back to Work Club, and we had a couple of virtual meetings where we discussed my CV and background. My coach wanted to know my experiences in HR (as I hadn’t done a specific HR role before) and I was able to talk through my different roles over the years. We looked at what sort of role would match my experience and any development areas I had whilst job hunting. During this time a role came up at a manufacturing business in Leicestershire that was perfect for me and my experience. I was given a FTC as HR Coordinator, and within a couple of weeks I was made permanent. I was able to work with some brilliant professionals, including my work coach! I feel I have been given some great support throughout this jump into a new field and am confident in what is expected of me and how I can keep working on improving my knowledge

Before I starting working with my BTWC coach I was struggling to land a senior HR role that mirrored my level of expertise. Due to the current pandemic, the job market was saturated with jobseekers and even though I was lucky enough to land interviews, I kept being pipped at the post. The feedback provided was rather bland and I had really begun doubting myself, thinking “is it me?”. As a result, I wasn’t sleeping as I was having stressful thoughts about being in financial difficulty due to limited funds as I’m the main breadwinner in our household.
I can’t quite believe that just one coaching session with my BTWC coach had the impact it did. She helped me to calm down my overactive and overthinking mind with a great exercise on focusing. Within a few short weeks, I was sleeping 8 hours a night and I had landed a really great job which had meant that my savings are now at pre-career break levels

Shout out to my fantastic work coach too! I found her to be incredibly knowledgeable on people and organisations and I felt motivated every time I spoke with her, leaving each conversation with practical tips to tackle my job search and interviews
I listened to affirmations and also undertook an Udemy interviewing skills course which gave me some great ways to stand out in this very competitive market. I ended up being called back for interviews and ended up with two offers which I never thought would happen
